TenCate and Hewlett Packard Enterprise - Keeping firefighters, soldiers, and police officers protected
This HPE customer story shows you what streamlined data protection really looks like in practice. In the TenCate Protective Fabrics story, you'll see how a global manufacturer moved from a complex, hard‑to‑manage environment to a resilient hybrid cloud model using HPE Zerto. You'll learn how TenCate cut ransomware impact, achieves low RPO for critical VMs and application, and uses HPE Zerto to simplify cloud migration between on‑prem, AWS, and Microsoft Azure with near push‑button moves. Our team can help you interpret these outcomes for your own environment, design a right‑sized HPE Zerto and HPE Morpheus approach, and support deployment so you get practical, measurable gains in resilience and agility. How did TenCate improve ransomware recovery?
Before working with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), TenCate Protective Fabrics struggled to recover quickly from ransomware. During an early CryptoLocker attack on a manufacturing facility, all file servers were infected. The only option was to restore from disk, which meant:
- 12 hours of data lost
- Two weeks to fully recover
After deploying HPE Zerto Software, the story changed. A later ransomware attack again hit directories on a file server in a manufacturing facility, but this time TenCate:
- Lost only 10 seconds of data
- Recovered in under 10 minutes
Using Zerto, the team simply selected a recovery point a few minutes before the infection, validated that the virtual machine (VM) was clean, reconnected the vNIC, and brought services back online. Combined with stronger end-user training on suspicious activity, TenCate now has a more confident, repeatable way to handle ransomware incidents while keeping critical operations running.
What role does HPE Zerto play in TenCate’s cloud strategy?
TenCate Protective Fabrics uses HPE Zerto as a core enabler of its hybrid cloud strategy. The company runs a complex mix of workloads, including virtualized databases, infrastructure VMs, and web application VMs, across multiple sites and clouds.
With HPE’s support, TenCate shifted its hybrid cloud environment:
- From on-premises into AWS
- Then from AWS back to on-premises
- And finally from on-premises into Microsoft Azure
HPE Zerto provided the data protection, migration, and disaster recovery capabilities needed at each step. According to TenCate’s senior systems engineer, Zerto gives them the flexibility to “go with whatever public cloud we want” because it underpins both business continuity and migration support.
Key outcomes include:
- Recovery point objectives (RPOs) as low as 6 seconds for protected VMs and applications
- Data migration that typically takes only 10–15 minutes from click to production
- The ability to rethink cloud choices without being locked into a single provider
In practice, this means TenCate can reimagine its cloud footprint over time while maintaining consistent protection and predictable recovery.
How did TenCate simplify data migration and organizational change?
TenCate Protective Fabrics used to operate in a regional model, where each business entity was grouped on a single network. As the company shifted to a more horizontal, global manufacturing model, it needed to separate and reorganize IT environments without disrupting operations.
HPE Zerto helped TenCate:
- Break out each business entity into its own domain
- Port VMs to new infrastructure before cutting over
- Reduce the risk and complexity of “disentangling” shared environments
In practical terms, TenCate used Zerto to move VMs to the right infrastructure first, then sever ties with the old domains. This approach:
- Lowered the operational risk of restructuring
- Reduced manual effort and day-to-day “grind” for the IT team
- Supported a smoother transition to a global manufacturing site model
By using HPE Zerto for both protection and migration, TenCate was able to reshape its IT landscape while continuing to support the mission of keeping firefighters, soldiers, police officers, and industrial workers protected with reliable, high-performance fabrics.
